AUTOTOUR IN TUSCANY
 
1ST DAY - ARRIVAL IN FLORENCE 
  • Airport and delivery of the car. 
  • Accommodation and overnight stay in Florence. 
2ND DAY - FLORENCE
  • Arrival in the area of the central station. Park your car in the large car park of the station and start your tour in Florence. 
  • The first jewel you will see is the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. Continuing towards Via Cerretani you will reach the Baptistery and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the famous Giotto Campanile. Via “Via dei Calzaiuoli”, you will be in Piazza della Signoria and therefore you will see Palazzo Vecchio. 
  •  You have to stroll along the Ponte Vecchio, to visit all the craft shops, including the famous goldsmiths. 
  • Take a moment to relax while tasting an excellent “panino”; we suggest: Il Panino del Chianti, Via dei Bardi, 63. At this point you will have two options: to return to Palazzo Vecchio for a visit to the Uffizi Gallery or to continue to the splendid Piazza dei Pitti, where you can rest or visit one of the beautiful museums such as Palazzo Pitti or the Museum of Silver with jewels, dishes, decoration which date from the time of the Medici until the 18th century. 
  • When returning to the S. Maria Novella Station, we advise you to make a stop in Piazza della Repubblica for a coffee or even an aperitif at the Giubbe Rosse, one of the best-known cafés / bistros in Italy 
3RD DAY - GREVE IN CHIANTI, RADDA IN CHIANTI, SIENA
  • To the south of Tuscany, you will return to the region of Chianti, the most celebrated wine in the world together with Bordeaux. 
  • First stop in Greve in Chianti, with its superb square, one of the most known market places in Tuscany. See also the small country churches around Greve that date from the eleventh to the fourteenth century. 
  • Continue to Radda in Chianti, crossing dozens of vineyards along the road. This is the Heart of the region of Chianti, in this small town of the Middle Ages, with its Palace of Podestà. Radda in Chianti was famous for its iceboxes, fed in the winter with snow, and which in summertime provided ice for the Nobles of Florence. 
  • Do not miss to visit to the Volpaia Castle where they also have tastings of one of the best Chianti.
  • For your lunch (if you had not had enough after the tasting at the Castle) our advice is: La Botte di Bacco, Viale XX Settembre 23 | Strada Principale Di Radda in Chianti Tel. +39 0577 739008. 
  • We will head to Monteriggioni, a true jewel among the beautiful villages of Italy. Completely surrounded by perfectly preserved medieval walls, some of which are passable on foot, it retains an atmosphere which was preserved over time. The town and its surroundings have been set for films, such as The English Patience and Stealing Beauty by Bernando Bertolucci. 
  • In late afternoon you will arrive in Siena. Accommodation and overnight stay in Siena 
4TH DAY – SIENA AND SAN GIMIGNANO
  • Visit the City of the famous Palio.
  • Leave your car and stroll through the street of this unique city. 
  • From Piazza del Campo with its majestic Pubblico Palace, in Santa Maria della Scala, one of the oldest Hospital in Europe, the Church of St. Augustine with frescoes recently discovered by Luca Signorelli, St. Dominic with the relics of St. Catherine, Fonte Branda , the oldest water source of the city and finally the Dome whose first stones date from the 10th century. 
  • In the afternoon we will leave to the city of one hundred Towers: San Gimignano one of the most spectacular and charming medieval villages of Tuscany. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, the village preserves intact its 14th century architecture. 
  •  Do not miss to visit of the Case-Torri. In medieval times, there were 70, but today there are only 13 left. The towers of these houses were not only an element of prestige (measured on the basis of the height of the houses), but were also elements of defence. And also the Porta San Giovanni, passage of the Via Francigena, the Palazzo Comunale, and the Piazza della Citerna. 
  • Return late at night to Siena. Accommodation and overnight stay in Siena 
5TH DAY – VAL D’ORCIA (MONTEPULCIANO/PIENZA/MONTICCHIELLO/SAN QUIRICO D’ORCIA/MONTALCINO) 162 KM
  • Today we will dive into the real Tuscany. Crossing the Valley of the Orcia River. 
  • We will reach Montepulciano, pretty little town on a hill, famous for its wine and also for its Renaissance palaces and Church of San Biagio. 
  • We will continue to Pienza, named as an ideal Renaissance city, with its palaces such as Piccolomini, which will become Pope Pio II, and finally the spectacular view of the Orcia Valley. 
  • Then, the small village of Monticchiello, which really seems to have stoppedin the Middle Ages and whose inhabitants play, in summer, the “Poor Theater”, stagings that recall the life of the fields and the territory. 
  • In San Quiricod’Orcia do not miss to visit the “Horti Leonini” of the beautiful gardens of the sixteenth century. 
  • Your walk will end in the heart of Tuscany in Montalcino, known for its exceptional wine, the Brunello, but you can visit other examples of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, such as its beautiful fortress. 
  • Accommodation and overnight stay in Siena.  
6TH DAY - SIENA / VOLTERRA / PONTEDERA / PISA / LUCCA (145 KM)
  • We will go to Volterra, a haven of almost 3,000 years of history, art and culture. 
  • Volterra is the city of the Etruscan civilization and a brilliant white alabaster. 
  • Start the visit from the medieval walls, look at an intact rural landscape which extends to the sea. Then by crossing the Porta all’Arco, built 2350 years ago, we will find ourselves inside a small medieval town perfectly preserved. 
  • The tour continues to the Cathedral with the famous Deposition and works of Benozzo Gozzoli and Fra Bartolomeo, at the Baptistery and the Roman Theatre with the adjacent baths. And there are also extraordinarily beautiful panoramic views. 
  • A stroll without traffic, in close contact with the everyday life and the traditions of the local crafts. We will go north and, if you wish, stop at Pontedera to visit the Vespa Museum, which has revolutionized two-wheeled transport around the world. 
  • We will arrive in Pisa where, of course, we cannot miss the Square of Miracles: the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo and the Cathedral. Pay attention to the Pulpit of Giovanni Pisano, the bronze doors of the Cathedral, as well as the funerary monuments of Campo Santo and its fascinating “Triumph of Death”, the gigantic medieval fresco of the artist Buffalmacco. 
  • Another 18 km and you will be in Lucca Overnight stay and accommodation in Lucca  
7TH DAY - LUCCA
  • Lucca is a city, fortunately not too included in the itineraries of mass tourism in Tuscany. 
  • One of the main tourist attractions of Lucca is certainly its wall, built between the fifteenth and seventeenth century and it is still intact. Lucca is one of the few cities in Italy that can still boast such a fortification. Thanks to the magnificent architecture of these fortifications, the historic centre has also remained almost intact, its jewels are Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, Piazza San Michele, Palazzo Gigli, Palazzo Pretorio and San Michele in Foro. 
  • The most important tower of Lucca is the Guinigi Tower, famous all over the world for its summit embellished by a hanging garden composed of green oaks. 
  • Finally, visit the Duomo of Lucca, San Martino Cathedral, with the paintings of Ghirlandaio and Tintoretto. 
  • If you have time, you can visit Torre del Lago near Lake Massaciuccoli, to see the House of Giacomo Puccini, the composer of the Traviata. 
  • During the summer there is the performance of Puccini’s Operas at the edge of Lake.

8TH DAY - LUCCA / FLORENCE AIRPORT (70 KM)
  • Departure to Florence Airport. 
  • If the time of your flight allows it, we recommend you stop in Montecatini Terme to see the interesting Liberty style villas of this spa town
